Up, up and away!
Jem Karacan, David Wheater and Adam Le Fondre scored the goals in a comprehensive win celebrated by more than 22,000 fans inside the Macron.
Joyous scenes around the ground were a marked departure on those last year as the financial instability and ownership issues contributed to one of the lowest points in the club’s recent history.
Parkinson believes promotion is payback for the fans who stood by Wanderers in the tough times.
“It can be tough being a football fan because you have to stick with your team through thick and thin – and there has certainly been some lean times at Bolton in the last few years,” he told The Bolton News. “But this is for those loyal people. This is a celebration of what they have helped us do.
“You could feel it building as the season went on – and I don’t think the players realised just what this meant to our supporters until they walked round and looked at people’s faces.
“I hope this will mean a great party for Bolton because they have kicked every single ball with us along the way.”
Parkinson’s own decision to leave an upwardly-mobile Bradford City for Wanderers in the summer has also been vindicated.

“People have said to me was it a good decision, and I’ve been saying to them ‘I’ll let you know if we get promotion,’ because if we’d been in the play-offs then who knows?” he said.
“I’ve enjoyed the challenge. Sometimes you get to this stage of the season and you’re drained but I don’t. I’ve enjoyed the freshness of coming to this great club and watching it evolve, watching the connection develop between the players and the fans.”
Parkinson also praised the attitude of his players, who went into the game knowing they had to avoid defeat to reclaim their place in the second tier.
“After last week, being a minute away from promotion, it did knock us a little bit,” he said. “To pick ourselves up was a massive credit to the lads.”

Gutted because my health prevented me travelling to the match from my home in Lincolnshire but, well done lads, team, manager and everyone connected with the best club in the country to which I am proud to call myself a follower and have been since 1964. Good luck next season.

52 years since I was first bought my season ticket for the ground at Burnden. I think it was 2 shillings and sixpence for a child. I have been to Wembley, Cardiff etc but knew this match was as big as any in our history. Now working in Australia and had to follow on the Bolton News delayed text ...as against Port Vale...nerve wracking to say the least. Well done to the manager and the team.
